Gift of Life’s DonateLife Walk—Canberra’s largest community event in support of the national DonateLife campaign—is taking place on Wednesday 13 February 2019 and registrations are now open!

The Walk is a timely opportunity to show your support for organ and tissue donation and to sign on to the Australian Organ Donor Register.

Gift of Life’s DonateLife Walk will start at and return to Regatta Point. Two simultaneous walks will be held, the standard bridge-to-bridge walk around Lake Burley Griffin as well as a shorter option around Commonwealth Park. Participants should gather at Regatta Point at 6.45am with both walks kicking off at 7am sharp from the same start point. Click here to download a map of the walks.

The bridge-to-bridge circuit of Lake Burley Griffin takes about 45 minutes to an hour and the shorter walk takes about 15–20 minutes.

You can walk or jog at your own pace, and pets, children and friends are very welcome. There’s even a free barbecue breakfast on the grass at Regatta Point afterwards! Limited free t-shirts, hats and show bags will be available for participants – first in best dressed. Parking at Regatta Point is free up until 8:30am. Parking inspectors will be in force to penalise anyone who has not paid for a ticket.

Everyone from our politicians, sporting and other personalities, business leaders and government staff are supporting the walk, as well as local school and university students and community groups.

Organised by Gift of Life and sponsored by the Government’s Organ and Tissue Authority, this major event helps raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation and involves thousands of Canberrans every year. By participating, you help spread the word about becoming an organ and tissue donor and signing onto the Australian Organ Donor Register.

Terry Connolly

Justice Terry Connolly died suddenly in the early morning of 25 September 2007 on Red Hill, having cycled to the top as part of his exercise routine.  He was a Supreme Court Judge since 2003, and Master since 1996.  Terry was the Member for Molonglo in 1990-1995 and served as the ACT Attorney-General and Minister in various portfolios, including Health.  He and his family have lived in Canberra for many years and he was a popular Canberran.

More importantly, Terry was a husband, father, son and, following his death, a tissue donor.

Terry’s wife, Dr Helen Watchirs, says that she and Terry had discussed their wishes in relation to organ donation.  This meant that at the dreadful time of death, she was clear on his wishes.  Terry’s donation to the improvement of other lives has given Helen and his daughters a sense of contribution, and has helped make up for a life cut short.
